Student Learning Outcomes for UCOL-U 110 First-Year Seminar (1–2 cr.)

Goal 1: Belonging

This first-year seminar course will support students in developing a sense of belonging to the IU Indianapolis academic community. By the end of this course, students will:

  • Evaluate their personal connection to campus and involvement in the campus community and explain through reflection how it helps them in their academic, professional, and social identity development.
  • Develop a personal support network to assist in achieving their goals at IU Indianapolis.
  • Understand the purpose of college learning and reflect on their personal strengths and challenges in establishing a learner mindset.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of their own identity and culture and seek to learn more about diversity in others.

Goal 2: Transitioning

This first-year seminar course will support students in their first-year transition and prepare them to meet the challenges of IU Indianapolis. By the end of this course, students will:

  • Understand student expectations and acceptable behavior according to the IU Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct.
  • Develop and implement academic success strategies.
  • Identify resources and develop strategies to address personal wellness needs (including food, housing, safety, stress management, and self-care).
  • Develop basic financial literacy skills.
  • Identify connections between life experiences and academic concepts/ideas related to their own interests.
  • Apply skills, abilities, concepts, or methods previously learned to a new experience that contributes to their understanding of the new situation or problem.

Goal 3: Planning

This first-year seminar course will support students in developing and using planning strategies for success at IU Indianapolis. By the end of this course, students will:

  • Develop a plan to achieve academic, career, and personal goals that integrate co-curricular and engaged learning opportunities.
  • Identify and plan career development opportunities that support academic and personal goals (e.g., internships, co-ops, research).
  • Navigate the processes of academic advising and course registration.
